Weight-Loss Products and Content Face Different TikTok Shop Rules

Devon Ariza

US TikTok Shop bans weight-loss supplements. Check product eligibility, adult-content limits and creator scripts before accepting a sample or filming.

No—if you mean weight-loss pills, appetite suppressants or fat-burning supplements on US TikTok Shop. Those remain prohibited. General, low-risk weight-loss language has more leeway in content aimed at adults aged 18+, but permission to use certain language does not make a banned product eligible for sale.

Sellers need to establish product eligibility first. Affiliate and UGC creators then need to check the claims in their videos, captions and LIVE streams. The rules below concern US TikTok Shop, not other Shop markets or paid-ad approval.

Product Eligibility

US TikTok Shop prohibits weight-loss supplements and diet products covered by its prohibited-products and supplements rules.

Content Decision

Feature-only wording does not make a prohibited product eligible. Establish product eligibility before commissioning or filming content.

This check is not platform approval or paid-ad clearance.

Weight-Loss Supplements Remain Prohibited

TikTok Shop’s US Prohibited Products Policy, dated September 29, 2026, prohibits products and supplements claiming to aid weight management or fat reduction. Examples include diet pills, appetite suppressants, fat burners and creams, and detox teas marketed for weight loss.

Product Or Offer US TikTok Shop Position
Diet pills, appetite suppressants, fat burners or weight-loss detox teas Prohibited; softer creator wording does not make them eligible.
Diet shakes, meal-replacement drinks or bars, and weight-loss bars classified under the supplements requirements Explicitly prohibited under those requirements.
Otherwise eligible vitamins, wellness or fitness supplements Potentially permitted; the supplements category is invite-only and requires qualification documents.
Yoga mats, resistance bands and general fitness equipment Potentially permitted; applicable category and content rules still apply.
Shapewear Describe shaping or smoothing effects, not actual weight loss.

The supplement distinctions come from TikTok Shop’s Dietary Supplements Requirements. The equipment and shapewear distinctions appear in its responsible health-content requirements and Weight Management Guide.

GLP-1 positioning needs a separate check. The prohibited-products policy bans products using “GLP,” “GLP-1” or similar terms in their title or branding, with an exception for clearly supportive, non-drug products for people already using GLP-1 medication that make no drug claims. That exception is not permission to sell a supplement as a prescription-drug substitute.

Adult Content Has More Leeway, Not Blanket Approval

TikTok Shop’s August Policy Pulse says enforcement now focuses on genuinely high-risk claims for buyers aged 18+, while everyday, non-quantified weight-loss language receives more leeway. High-risk muscle-gain claims are also in scope.

The Weight Management Guide says the update began rolling out in late July, with full enforcement starting August 8, 2026. It permits general low-risk adult weight-loss content but still prohibits:

  • Rapid, guaranteed or quantified results, including outcome deadlines.
  • Claims that a product treats a weight-related medical condition.
  • Claims that a product works like GLP-1 medication, steroids or other pharmaceuticals, including coded comparisons.
  • Product misuse, disordered eating and risky weight-management behavior.
  • Before-and-after body comparisons tied to product results, unless a valid category exemption applies.

Sports and fitness equipment retains a limited exemption for certain weight-related or before-and-after content. Do not extend that exemption to supplements or shapewear. An equipment brief still needs to meet the exemption’s conditions; its category alone is not a blanket clearance.

The published guidance is not fully consistent. The guide’s updated allowances sit alongside instructions not to credit a product or its ingredients with weight loss. The separate health-content requirements also retain broader restrictions.

If a brief depends on that new leeway, seek clarification from TikTok Shop before filming. Demonstrating an eligible product’s actual features is the lower-risk choice than building the sale around a body-change promise.

If the brand plans to run the asset as paid advertising, check the relevant TikTok Ads policy separately. Shop eligibility and content rules do not establish paid-ad approval.

Check the Product Before Rewriting the Script

Before accepting a sample, review the exact product’s title, packaging, label, description and category in the relevant market. A seller’s assurance that “other creators are posting it” does not establish eligibility.

For otherwise eligible supplements, request confirmation of the seller’s invitation and qualification status. Category approval is not an exemption for prohibited products. A banned weight-loss supplement cannot be rescued by a neutral script or a disclaimer.

A resistance-band brief, for example, could demonstrate grip, resistance options and storage. A supplement brief asking for “I lost 10 pounds in two weeks” needs to be paused. Ask the seller to establish product eligibility before commissioning replacement wording; the quantified, time-bound claim also needs to be removed.

Review Every Claim Surface and Lock Down Re-Edits

The claim review must cover spoken lines, on-screen text, captions, hashtags, visuals and planned LIVE talking points. TikTok’s health-content requirements cover more than the script alone. Removing a spoken promise while leaving it in the headline does not resolve the issue.

For a UGC commission, put script approval, permitted channels and re-edit approval in writing. A neutral demonstration can become a different claim if the brand adds a transformation headline later. If paid advertising is part of the usage agreement, review that intended use separately rather than treating Shop approval as clearance for every placement.

Affiliate disclosure is another obligation, not a cure for unsupported claims. The FTC’s influencer guidance requires clear disclosure of financial or free-product relationships, placed with the endorsement. For video, put it in the video; for LIVE, repeat it periodically. “I earn a commission if you buy” directly explains an affiliate relationship.

Once product eligibility and the brief are settled, use the TikTok Shop creator and seller workflow to handle affiliate setup. A product tag or a live listing is not a substitute for checking the product and the claims.
