Animate Your First Layer with Two Simple Keyframes

Creating a keyframe in After Effects is less complicated than the interface initially suggests. For any property that provides an animation stopwatch, the reliable basic process is:
- Select a layer.
- Reveal the property you want to animate.
- Place the current-time indicator where the animation should begin.
- Set the starting value and click that property’s stopwatch once.
- Move the current-time indicator to another time.
- Change the property value to create the next keyframe.
- Preview and adjust the result.
This guide uses Position for the first exercise because movement makes the relationship between time, values, and keyframes easy to see. Once the process makes sense, you can apply the same method to Scale, Rotation, Opacity, and effect parameters that display a stopwatch.
What a keyframe records in After Effects
A keyframe records the value of a layer property at a particular point in time. The current-time indicator—often called the playhead—determines the time at which that value is recorded.
For example, one Position keyframe might record that a caption is on the left side of the composition at the beginning of a clip. A second Position keyframe might record that the caption is on the right side two seconds later. After Effects calculates the intermediate values between those keyframes, creating movement from the first recorded position to the second. The keyframes do not describe every individual frame manually. Instead, they establish important values at important times:
- First keyframe: Position equals the starting location at the starting time.
- Second keyframe: Position equals the ending location at a later time.
- Between them: After Effects calculates the changing Position values.
One keyframe records a state, but it does not normally create a visible transition by itself. To see a property change over time, you generally need at least two keyframes at different times with different recorded values.
That distinction matters. Two Position keyframes with identical values will not create visible movement, even if they occur at different times. A visible Position transition requires both a time interval and a change in Position.
After Effects can interpolate between the recorded values, but interpolation alone does not guarantee a polished result. Keyframe spacing affects how quickly the change happens, while interpolation settings determine how the rate or value behaves between keyframes.
Common beginner properties include:
- Position: Where the layer appears in the composition
- Scale: How large or small the layer appears
- Rotation: The layer’s angle
- Opacity: How transparent or visible the layer is
These properties appear in a layer’s Transform group. Many effect parameters can also be animated when they provide their own stopwatch.
The four controls to find before creating a keyframe
Before animating anything, identify four interface elements: the layer property, its stopwatch, the current-time indicator, and the keyframe marker.
1. The layer and its property
Select the layer you want to animate in the Timeline panel. It might be a text, image, shape, or video layer. Expand the layer’s options, then expand Transform to see properties such as Position, Scale, Rotation, and Opacity.
Selecting the correct layer matters because it determines which object your changes affect. If you reveal Position on the wrong layer, you will animate the wrong object.
2. The property stopwatch
An animatable property has a stopwatch beside its name. The stopwatch controls animation for that entire property.
When the stopwatch is inactive, changing the property changes its current value without building a timed sequence. Clicking the inactive stopwatch enables animation and creates the first keyframe at the current-time indicator.
Many effect parameters also display stopwatches. Looking for a stopwatch is therefore a practical way to determine whether a particular control can be keyframed.
3. The current-time indicator
The current-time indicator determines when a keyframe is recorded. It appears as a movable time control in the Timeline panel, with a vertical line extending through the timeline.
Moving a layer in the Composition panel does not move the current-time indicator. You must deliberately position the indicator at the intended time before recording or changing a value.
4. The keyframe marker
After a keyframe has been created, a marker appears on the property’s timeline row at the recorded time. That marker represents one stored property value.
Do not confuse the marker with the stopwatch:
- The stopwatch enables or disables animation for the entire property.
- A keyframe marker represents one recorded value at one time.
- Multiple keyframe markers can belong to the same animated property.
This difference becomes especially important when deleting keyframes. Removing a selected marker deletes an individual keyframe. Turning off the active stopwatch removes the property’s complete keyframe sequence.
Interface arrangement, labels, colors, and icon appearance can vary by After Effects version and workspace. Panels can also be resized or moved. Even when your screen does not exactly match a tutorial, follow the same functional path: select the layer, reveal an animatable property, position the playhead, and use the property’s stopwatch. Create a two-keyframe Position animation step by step
Begin with a composition containing one visible layer. A text caption is a useful practice object, but an image, shape, logo, product cutout, or video layer also works.
For this exercise, the layer will start in one place at the beginning of the composition and move to another place two seconds later.
Step 1: Select the layer
Click the layer in the Timeline panel. Confirm that the correct layer is highlighted before continuing.
If several layers overlap in the Composition panel, selecting the layer in the Timeline is usually the clearest way to avoid animating the wrong item.
Step 2: Reveal Position
Expand the selected layer, open Transform, and locate Position.
Alternatively, press P while the layer is selected. This reveals Position without requiring you to expand each group manually.
Position normally displays two values:
- X: Horizontal placement
- Y: Vertical placement
For this exercise, it is enough to remember that X controls horizontal placement and Y controls vertical placement.
Step 3: Move the current-time indicator to the starting time
Move the current-time indicator to the beginning of the composition or to another time at which you want the movement to begin.
This determines when the first Position value will be recorded. If the playhead is at one second, for example, the first keyframe will be created at one second rather than at the start of the composition.
Step 4: Establish the starting Position
Place the layer where it should begin. You can do this in either of two ways:
- Drag the selected layer in the Composition panel.
- Edit its numerical Position values in the Timeline panel.
For example, you might place a caption near the left side of the frame. You could also position it outside the visible composition if you want it to enter the scene, but keeping it visible makes a first test easier to inspect.
At this point, Position animation is not yet enabled. You are establishing the value that the first keyframe will record.
Step 5: Click the Position stopwatch once
Click the stopwatch beside Position.
This single action does two things:
- It enables animation for Position.
- It creates the initial Position keyframe at the current-time indicator.
Look at the Position row in the timeline. A keyframe marker should appear where the current-time indicator is located.
Checkpoint: Confirm that the marker appears at the intended starting time. If it does not, make sure you clicked the stopwatch beside Position and that the correct layer is selected and expanded.
Step 6: Move the current-time indicator to a later time
Move the current-time indicator to the Timeline location identified as two seconds, or choose another clearly later time.
Do this deliberately. Changing the layer’s Position does not advance the playhead. If you leave the playhead on the first keyframe and move the layer, you will edit the starting value instead of creating an ending value later in time.
Step 7: Change Position
With the playhead at the later time, move the layer to its ending location. You can drag it in the Composition panel or edit its X and Y Position values.
Because Position animation is already active, After Effects creates another Position keyframe when the value changes. Adobe’s tutorial demonstrates this core workflow: click the stopwatch to create the first keyframe, move the current-time indicator, and then change the animated property to add the next keyframe.
Do not click the stopwatch again to make the second keyframe. The stopwatch is already active. Clicking it again would disable Position animation and remove the keyframes on that property.
Checkpoint: Confirm all three of the following:
- A second marker appears at the current-time indicator.
- The second Position value differs from the first.
- The two markers occur at different times.
You should now have a starting Position at the beginning of the animation and an ending Position two seconds later.
Step 8: Preview the movement
Move the playhead to a point before the first keyframe and press Spacebar to begin the preview. Press it again to pause.
The layer should travel from the first recorded Position to the second. If it does not, inspect the markers, times, and values before changing anything else.
The complete sequence is:
Select the layer → reveal Position → place the playhead → set the starting Position → click the stopwatch once → move the playhead → change Position → preview.
That is the basic answer to how to create a keyframe in After Effects. Retiming, easing, motion-path editing, and additional properties are later refinements.
Apply the same workflow to Scale, Rotation, Opacity, and effects
The Position exercise teaches a reusable pattern. For any supported property with a stopwatch:
- Place the playhead at the starting time.
- Set the starting value.
- Click the property’s inactive stopwatch to enable animation and record the first value.
- Move the playhead to another time.
- Change the value to create the next keyframe.
- Preview the result.
The visual result changes with the property, but the underlying process remains the same.
Scale
Scale controls the layer’s size. To animate a callout growing into view, begin with a smaller Scale value, create the first keyframe, move to a later time, and increase the value.
The appropriate values depend on the layer and design. A subtle size change may suit a product label, while a larger change may suit a graphic transition. Treat these as creative choices rather than universal settings.
Rotation
Rotation records the layer’s angle. One keyframe can record the graphic at its initial angle, while another records a different angle later.
For example, a small badge could rotate as it appears beside a caption. The amount and direction should match the intended effect: a slight turn communicates something different from a complete rotation.
Opacity
Opacity controls transparency. A fade requires different Opacity values at different times.
For a fade-in:
- Set a lower Opacity value at the first time.
- Click the Opacity stopwatch.
- Move to a later time.
- Set a higher Opacity value.
For a fade-out, reverse the relationship. Opacity—not Scale—is the property that directly controls transparency.
Effect parameters
Some effects contain parameters with their own stopwatches. When a stopwatch is available, use the same sequence: establish the first value, click the stopwatch, move to another time, and change the parameter.
Do not assume every displayed control is animatable. Check the individual property or effect parameter for a stopwatch.
Useful reveal shortcuts
With a layer selected, these keys reveal common Transform properties:
P— PositionS— ScaleR— RotationT— OpacityU— Properties on the selected layer that contain keyframes
These commands reveal properties; they do not replace the reliable stopwatch workflow. A concise After Effects hotkey reference documents the P, S, R, T, and U property-reveal shortcuts.
For short-form content and social media edits, the workflow can be used to:
- Move a caption into place.
- Fade in a product label.
- Scale a callout when a feature is mentioned.
- Rotate an arrow or decorative graphic.
- Animate an effect parameter during a transition.
Start with one property at a time. Once each animation works independently, you can combine properties—for example, changing Position and Opacity over the same interval. Each property has its own stopwatch and keyframes.
Edit, move, copy, and delete keyframes without erasing the animation
After creating keyframes, you may need to correct either their values or their timing. These are related but distinct edits:
- Correcting a value changes what a property records at a keyframe.
- Retiming a keyframe changes when that recorded value occurs.
Understanding the difference helps prevent accidental extra keyframes.
Change when a keyframe occurs
Drag a keyframe marker horizontally in the Timeline panel. Moving it left makes its recorded value occur earlier; moving it right makes the value occur later.
The stored value stays the same. Only its time changes.
For example, suppose the second Position keyframe records a caption on the right side of the frame. Moving that keyframe from the two-second point to the three-second point does not change the destination. It gives the movement more time to reach that destination.
You can also select multiple keyframes and move them together when an entire sequence needs to occur earlier or later.
Correct an existing keyframe value
Place the current-time indicator exactly over the keyframe marker you want to edit. Verify that it is the intended marker, then change the property value.
Exact placement matters. If animation is enabled and the playhead is between existing markers, changing the property may create an additional keyframe instead of editing one of the originals.
A careful workflow is:
- Select the layer and press
Uto reveal its keyframed properties. - Move the playhead directly onto the intended marker.
- Check the displayed property value.
- Change the value.
- Confirm that no unexpected marker appeared elsewhere.
You can use J and K to move the current-time indicator between keyframes, which can be more precise than dragging when several markers are close together.
Delete one keyframe
Select the individual keyframe marker and press Delete or Backspace.
If several keyframes are selected, the command removes all selected markers. Check the selection before deleting.
Important: Do not turn off the stopwatch when you only want to delete one keyframe. Turning off an active property stopwatch removes every keyframe on that property.
The stopwatch is an animation-level control, not an individual-keyframe delete button.
Copy and paste keyframes
Select the keyframes you want to reuse, then use the standard copy and paste commands:
- Windows:
Ctrl+CandCtrl+V - macOS:
Command+CandCommand+V
Multiple selected keyframes can be moved or copied together. The destination property and context still need to be appropriate for the pasted values.

Before editing, ask: Am I changing the recorded value, or changing when that value happens? For a value correction, place the playhead on the marker. For a timing correction, move the marker horizontally.
Control speed, easing, and the Position motion path
Once the layer moves successfully, you can refine three different aspects of the animation:
- Timing: How long the transition takes
- Interpolation: How the rate or value changes between keyframes
- Path: Where a layer travels during Position animation
These controls solve different problems.
Use keyframe spacing to control speed
Suppose two versions of an animation contain identical starting and ending Position values:
- Version A reaches the ending Position after one second.
- Version B reaches the same ending Position after three seconds.
Version A completes the same change in less time, so it appears faster. Version B has more time to complete the change, so it appears slower.
To speed up the transition, move the keyframes closer together. To slow it down, move them farther apart. This changes the duration without changing the endpoint values.
This is often the cleanest correction when an object reaches the right destination but arrives too early or too late.
Separate timing from the Position path
Timeline placement controls when the recorded Position values occur. The Position motion path controls where the layer travels in the Composition panel.
Two keyframes can remain two seconds apart whether the layer travels in a straight line or follows a curved route. Editing the path changes the route; moving the keyframes changes the timing.
When Position is animated and the necessary layer controls are visible, the Composition panel can display a motion path between recorded positions. Adjusting that path changes the route without requiring different start and end times.
For a first animation, a straight path is enough. Curved paths and additional Position keyframes become useful when an object must travel around another element or follow a deliberate arc.
Linear keyframes are a valid starting point
Basic keyframes commonly begin with linear interpolation. This is not an error. A uniform rate of change may be suitable for a particular animation.
A constant rate can, however, make movement begin or end more abruptly than desired. Easing is one optional way to change that behavior.
Use Easy Ease as an optional refinement
Easy Ease changes interpolation so that the rate can vary around the selected keyframes. It is not required to create an animation, and it is not automatically better for every shot.
To apply it:
- Select the relevant keyframes.
- Choose Keyframe Assistant > Easy Ease.
- Alternatively, press
F9. - Preview and compare the result.
The keyframe values and times still control the animation. Easing changes the transition behavior rather than replacing those fundamentals. Adobe’s keyframe tutorial demonstrates both Easy Ease and Position motion-path adjustment.
Use the preview to decide whether easing suits the shot. A mechanical interface movement, a sudden graphic change, and a floating object may call for different interpolation.
Understand Hold interpolation
Hold interpolation prevents a gradual transition before the next keyframe. The property maintains one recorded value and then changes abruptly when the next keyframe is reached.
This is useful when you want a deliberate step between fixed states rather than a continuous transition.
Bezier controls and the Graph Editor provide more detailed control over paths, values, and rates of change. They are advanced tools, not requirements for creating or correcting a basic two-keyframe animation.
Troubleshoot keyframes that do not work as expected
When an animation fails, inspect the property, playhead, values, and markers in that order. Most beginner problems come from one of those areas.
No second keyframe appears
First, check whether the property’s stopwatch is active and whether an initial keyframe exists. After Effects can create a later keyframe when you change an animated property, but animation must already be enabled.
If no initial marker exists, return to the intended starting time, set the starting value, and click the property stopwatch once. A missing initial keyframe is a common reason an expected animation does not play.
Next, confirm that you moved the playhead to a different time before changing the value. If you remained on the first keyframe, you probably edited its value rather than creating a later keyframe.
Finally, make sure the property value actually changed.
Two keyframes exist, but nothing visibly changes
Compare their values. Two Position keyframes with identical X and Y values do not produce Position movement. Likewise:
- Identical Scale values do not produce a size change.
- Identical Rotation values do not produce a rotation change.
- Identical Opacity values do not produce a fade.
Also confirm that the layer is visible and the preview includes the keyframes. Press U on the selected layer to expose its animated properties, move the playhead before the first marker, and press Spacebar to preview again.
An unwanted keyframe appeared
This usually happens because you changed an animated property while the playhead was not positioned on the existing keyframe you intended to edit.
To correct the original value:
- Undo the unwanted change if appropriate.
- Place the playhead exactly on the intended marker.
- Verify that it is the correct keyframe.
- Change the value again.
- Confirm that no additional marker appeared.
Creating a keyframe after an animated value changes at a new time is expected behavior, not by itself evidence of a software problem.
All the keyframes disappeared
Check whether the property stopwatch was switched off. Disabling an active stopwatch removes the keyframes belonging to that property.
If you wanted to remove only one keyframe, select its marker and press Delete or Backspace. If the stopwatch was disabled accidentally and the action remains in the undo history, undo it before making more edits.
The animation is too fast or too slow
Do not change the endpoint values if the object already starts and ends in the correct places. Change the spacing between the keyframes:
- Closer together for a faster transition
- Farther apart for a slower transition
Then preview again. This keeps timing changes separate from design changes.
The movement begins or ends too abruptly
Linear interpolation may be producing a uniform rate followed by an immediate stop. That can be appropriate, but if it does not suit the shot, select the relevant keyframes and try Keyframe Assistant > Easy Ease or F9.
Preview before and after. Easing is an option, not a repair every animation requires.
The Position motion path is not visible
First verify the basic conditions:
- The animated layer is selected.
- Position is revealed.
- Position contains at least two keyframes.
- Layer controls are visible.
- The Composition panel is active.
Workspaces and display controls vary, so avoid changing several unrelated view settings at once. Even if the path remains hidden, the timeline keyframes may still animate correctly. Preview the movement to distinguish a display issue from an animation issue.
Why does changing a property sometimes fail to create another keyframe?
A changed value creates a subsequent keyframe only after animation has been enabled for that property. Click the inactive stopwatch to create the initial keyframe, move the playhead to another time, and then change the value.
If the playhead remains on an existing keyframe, the change edits that keyframe instead.
What happens if I click an active stopwatch after creating several keyframes?
Clicking an active stopwatch disables animation for that property and removes all of its keyframes. It does not add another marker or delete only the selected keyframe.
To remove one keyframe, select its marker and press Delete or Backspace.
How do I edit one keyframe without accidentally creating a new one?
Place the current-time indicator exactly over the existing marker before changing the property value. Use J or K to navigate between keyframes if dragging is imprecise.
Changing an animated property between existing markers may create another keyframe at that time.
How do I make keyframed animation faster, slower, or less abrupt?
Move keyframes closer together to complete the same transition faster or farther apart to make it slower.
To alter how the rate changes around the keyframes, try Keyframe Assistant > Easy Ease or press F9. Keep linear interpolation when a uniform rate suits the animation.
For Position animation, remember that timing and path are separate: adjust timeline spacing to change when the movement happens and the motion path to change where the layer travels.
Can effects be keyframed as well as Position, Scale, Rotation, and Opacity?
Some effect parameters can be keyframed when they display a stopwatch. Set the starting value, click the stopwatch once, move the playhead, and change the value.
Do not assume every control is animatable. Check the individual parameter for a stopwatch.
The reliable basic workflow is consistent for properties that provide animation stopwatches: select a layer, reveal the property, place the playhead, set the starting value, click the stopwatch once, move to a new time, and change the value. Repeat that sequence with Position, Scale, Rotation, and Opacity before adding complexity.
Refine the result by retiming the keyframes or applying optional easing. Above all, remember that deleting one selected keyframe is different from disabling the stopwatch: the first removes an individual recorded value, while the second removes the property’s entire keyframe sequence.
