Write An Instagram Bio With A Clear Next Step

Devon Ariza

Use a simple bio formula, practical examples and a copy-ready worksheet to explain your offer, identify your audience and give visitors a clear next step.

Write an Instagram bio that says what you offer, who it is for and what to do next. Start with a specific role or topic, add one useful detail, and finish with an action that matches your profile link.

For example:

UGC creator for beauty brands | Product demos + tutorials | View my portfolio ↓

Instagram’s bio description has a 150-character limit, which Meta also uses in its official bio-writing guidance. Keep the full draft comfortably within that space, then check it in Instagram after adding line breaks or emoji.

Build Your Instagram Bio

Choose an example, then replace it with your own offer and next step.

79 / 150 Characters

Examples are starting points. Use only claims that are true for you. Spaces and line breaks count; complex emoji can count differently in Instagram.

Build The Bio From Three Parts

Part Write this Leave out
Role or offer What you make, sell, teach or share A list of every skill you have
Useful detail Audience, location, content format or relevant specialty An unsupported claim to be “the best”
Next step View my work, book, shop or follow for a clear reason A vague instruction with no useful destination

Use this draft:

[Role or offer] for [audience] | [Useful detail] | [Next step]

The brackets are a writing aid. Replace them before publishing, and omit any part that does not help a visitor decide whether the account is relevant.

For a UGC creator, the specialty and route to the portfolio usually matter more than a list of editing tools. A local business may need its city or service area instead.

Start With An Example That Fits Your Account

Creator

UGC creator

Beauty UGC | Product demos + tutorials | View my portfolio ↓

Local business

Custom cakes in Austin | Vegan options available | See flavors and order ↓

Service provider

Portfolio account

Fashion photographer | Budapest + Vienna | Editorial and campaigns | View my work ↓

Personal account

Reader, trail runner and amateur cook | Notes from everyday experiments

These are original illustrative examples. Keep only details that are true for your account. A personal profile does not need a commercial offer or a sales instruction.

Make Each Profile Field Do A Different Job

Use the username for a recognizable account identity. Use the Name field for a useful name, role, business type or location. Let the bio explain the value and next step.

For example, a Name field reading “Maya | UGC Creator” can let the bio focus on “Beauty product demos + tutorials | Portfolio ↓”. Repeating the same job title in every field uses space without explaining more.

A category or contact button may handle information that would otherwise fill the bio. Inspect the options available in your account rather than assuming every account has the same controls. Highlights can hold supporting material such as work samples, FAQs and background.

Relevant wording makes an account easier for a person to understand. It does not guarantee a search position, follower growth or sales.

Match The Action To Its Destination

Bio instruction The link should open
View my work Your relevant portfolio
Book a consult A booking or service page
Shop the launch The current product or collection
Get the checklist The promised resource or signup page

A clear instruction fails if visitors must search a general homepage for the promised item. Open the destination on a phone and follow the same path a visitor would take.

Cut Vague Wording Before Cutting Useful Detail

Compare these two drafts:

Entrepreneur | Dreamer | Coffee lover

Email strategist for indie shops | Practical retention examples | Book a consult ↓

The second identifies a service, an audience and a next step. Personality can stay when it adds something distinctive, but it should not hide the account’s purpose.

Remove unnecessary introductions such as “I am a passionate…” and use concrete nouns. Replace “Helping people achieve their dreams” with the actual service or topic. Include results, awards or credentials only when you can support them.

Use ordinary readable text and a small number of separators. Emoji can reinforce meaning, but the visitor should not have to decode them to understand the offer. Avoid publishing a precise home address or personal contact details when a service area or business contact channel is sufficient.

Check The Finished Bio

Show the profile header to someone unfamiliar with the account. Ask them to identify what it offers, who it serves and what they would click next. If they cannot answer, revise the role, useful detail or action.

Then verify the character limit, mobile appearance and link destination in Instagram. Update the bio when your offer or priority changes. If you compare versions, change one main element at a time and track the action you care about; changes in traffic and posting activity can also affect the result.
